The Department of Government Efficiency placed a copy of the Social Security Administration’s database on a vulnerable cloud server in June, according to a whistleblower complaint by SSA Chief Data Officer Charles Borges. The filing alleges that more than 300 million Americans’ personal data, including Social Security numbers, may have been exposed due to a lack of security oversight. Borges said SSA CIO Aram Moghaddassi approved the duplicate dataset in a way that circumvented normal review, granting DOGE staff improper access. The Government Accountability Project described the server as a “live copy of the entire country’s Social Security information.” SSA said it is not aware of any breach and remains committed to safeguarding sensitive data. Senate Democrats previously proposed auditing DOGE’s access after the Supreme Court allowed the agency to review SSA records as part of its fraud detection efforts.
